Basketball underway

With local football teams now finished in the publishing area, basketball teams at local high schools take center stage for the rest of 2009 and well into the spring of 2010.

The Delhi Charter Gators are off to a rough start at 0-3 on the young season. Offensive woes began for the Gators in a season opening 72-33 loss at Tensas and have continued against Sicily Island (57-40) and last Tuesday against the Caldwell Spartans (68-17).

Defensivley, the Gators have shown flashes of being able to hold their own against a pair of larger schools when playing Tensas and Caldwell. Caldwell is a Class 3A school while DCS plays in Class 1A of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.

Over at Franklin Parish High School, the Patriots are 2-2 after earning a split of games in the Vidalia tournament. The Patriots scored a 65-48 win over Ferriday before losing to the Vidallia Vikings, 64-54.

The defending Class 3A runner-up was too much on the defensive end for the Patriots to overcome.

Franklin Parish got top performances from center Brandon Simms and guard Roosevelt Walker.

Tyrell Winn is stepping into a new starting role this season and logging strong minutes for the Patriots as is new comers Tearius Ward and Xavier Grant on the varsity squad.
