Patriots hit basketball courts on Wednesday The Franklin Parish Patriots will continue their boy's basketball season on Wednesday night when they play in the Vidalia tournament.
The Vidalia Vikings are coming off one of their best seasons in recent memory as they lost by eight in the Class 3A state championship game to Richwood High School. The two teams will play Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
The tournament will continue on Friday and Saturday with the Patriots hooking up with Class 2A powerhouse Madison Parish Jaguars on Friday night.
The Patriots will close the week with a Saturday contest against the Ferriday Trojans. The game will be the second meeting in the last week between the two schools and this tournament will mark a real challenge for the squad
"We lost eight seniors and we are inexperienced right now," Patriot head coach Wyscee Kerry said. "We played in summer league games. Right now, our guard play has to improve."
Two starters return for the Patriots this season after Franklin Parish finished second in district 2-4A last season.
Brandon Simms returns at center and is a two-time first-team all-district selection. Roosevelt Walker come on strong last season as the point guard for the team and returns as the lone returning starter other than Simms.
Tyrell Winn, brother of departed leading scorer of 2008, J.C. Winn, will start at the other guard position and will be counted on for his solid jump shot and consistent free throw shooting.
Xavier Grant will start at power foward and is making is debut this season on the varsity level as he and all the reserve players played exclusivley on the junior varsity team at Franklin Parish last season.
Tavarius Ward will round out the starting five for the Patriots in 2009 as he also played for the junior varsity last season.
The Patriots will be playing in the Madison Jaguar tournament this week as they continue their season. |
