Posted 10/27/09 M.J. 'Son' Batey Jr. Funeral services for M. J. "Son" Batey, Jr. 76 of Wisner were held Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 in First Baptist Church in Wisner with Rev. Thomas Peoples officiating. Interment followed in Oakley Cemetery under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro. He was born to Matthew Julian and Ethel Carmen McCarty Batey on Nov. 26, 1932 in Wisner and passed from this life Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Batey was a member of First Baptist Church in Wisner, where he served as deacon and also taught a Sunday school class at Marianna Nursing Home. He was a member of Gideon's International. He was a graduate of Wisner High School and Northwestern State University. He received his +30 at LA Tech University and his masters in education from Mississippi College. Mr. Batey began his career in education at St. Amant Elementary School in Baton Rogue, but moved back to Franklin Parish in 1961, and was teacher and coach at Wisner Elementary School. He served as principal at Winnsboro Lower Elementary School and then at Wisner Jr. High School. He was appointed as administrator of NLU Franklin and retired from education in 1989. During "Son's" retirement, he doted on his loving family and found time to enjoy his favorite pastimes, which included fishing, lawn mowing, "piddlin" with small engines and his old truck, and remained a devoted LSU fan. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife JoAnn Ezell Batey, sister Fay Rollins, brother Robert Earl Batey. He leaves behind his wife Joyce Borum Batey; three children and spouses Laura Batey and Tommy McFarland, Michael Matthew and Danielle Dufrene Batey, and Anna Carol Batey all of West Monroe; sister Sandy Batey Brister and husband Mark of Monroe; brother Kenneth Ray Batey of Sicily Island; six grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary Kate, and Amanda McFarland, Kade and Cameron Batey, and Julian Michael Batey. Pallbearers were Alan Borum, Charles Borum, Nathan Calhoun, Marc McCarty, Trey Kiper, J. T. Tims, Jesse Young and Ray Young. Deacons of First Baptist Church in Wisner served as honorary pallbearers. Zella Brown Funeral services for Zella Brown, 79, of Wisner, will be held at South Central Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 2 p.m., with Rev. T. J. Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Grove Cemetery under the direction of Young's Community Memorial Funeral Home in Winnsboro. Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 10, 1929 in Jena, La., and passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at Richardson Medical Center in Rayville. She was a resident of Wisner, a homemaker, and a member of the South Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kleinert Clark Brown; father, Robert W. Beasley; mother, Bessie (Swillie) Beasley; brother, R. W. Beasley Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn (Brown) Fuller and husband Kevin of Eros, La.; two sons: Maurice Brown, Steve Brown and wife Lynn, all of Wisner; sister, Blanche Posey of Winnsboro; four grandchildren: Leah Pohoralski and husband Pete of Lake Charles; Madeline Brown of New Orleans; Evan Wollerson and Will McDowell, both of Eros. Jimmie Aswell Curry Services for Mrs. Jimmie Aswell Curry, age 77, of Crowville, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at Wayside Pentecostal Church of Winnsboro with Rev. Elsie Rae Ferguson Everett Mrs. Elsie Rae Ferguson Everett, age 87, of Lawrence, Miss., died on Oct. 20, 2009 at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Miss. Graveside services were held Friday Oct. 23, 2009 at the Decedar Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawrence, Miss. James F. Webb Funeral Home of Newton, Miss. was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Everett was a life-long resident of Mississippi, a member of the Eastern Star, and the Lawrence Homemaker Club. She is survived by a son, Ronald R. Mrs. Graham was born Feb. 24, 1953 in Beaumont, Texas, and passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at her residence in Winnsboro. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her father, Steve McDaniel; mother, Alice (Hilburn) McDaniel; daughter, Tammy Graham; brother, Steve Allen McDaniel. Robert "Cole" Kirksey A gathering of family and friends was held Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at Gill Funeral Home Winnsboro for Cole Kirksey. Cole was born on September 28, 1971 in Monroe, La., and passed away on October 19, 2009 in Natchitoches, La., after a lengthy illness. Cole was a Neville High School graduate and ran cross-country during his high school years. He enjoyed various hobbies and interests-most especially reading, bicycling, music, family and friends. Cole was a tender and loving man who had a great sense of humor and brought us all many laughs around the campfire. Cole loved to cook and loved to eat. He will be missed by so many, but will never be forgotten. He is survived by his mother Sonija Dollar Girndt and stepfathers Max Dollar, Jr. and Paul Girndt; his father and stepmother Don and San Brown of Natchitoches, LA; his brothers Christopher Dollar of Shreveport, LA, Slater Brown of California and Stoney Brown of Austin, Texas. Cole is the maternal grandson of Rosie Brown of Winnsboro and the late Cecil Brown. He is also the nephew of Keith Brown of Monroe, LA, and Sharon Harris and husband Richard of Tallulah, LA. He will be greatly missed by his mother's lifelong friend and his "second mom" Cathy Coker Simmons, and a host of cousins and special friends. His illness did not define him. Mr. Smith was born May 5, 1955 in Iran, Texas to Grady and Martha Callaway Smith and passed from this life on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 in Little Rock, Ark. He loved the outdoors where he spent many hours in the woods and on the rivers in Louisiana and Arkansas, hunting, fishing, and camping with people he loved. He is preceded in death by his grandparents: William D. "Pete" and Annie L. Smith, Thomas "Tom" and Agathea Callaway; aunt and uncle: Jerrivon and Billy Eldridge; Thomas "Norman" Smith and aunt and uncle Betty and Donald Callaway. Lillian Patrick Funeral services for Lillian Patrick, 89, of Dunn, La. were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at the Dunn Baptist Church in Dunn, with Rev. Mrs. Patrick was born to the union of her parents Pierre and Ida Guillot on Oct. 30, 1919 in Vick, La. and passed from this life on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 in Winnsboro. She was a member of Dunn Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband: Dewey Brownell; a beloved sister: Opal and several brothers. She is survived by her husband: George Henry Patrick of Dunn; one son: Lee Brownell of Andrew, Texas; one daughter: Gracie Jones of Winnsboro; two sisters: Marry Lee and Dorothy; five brothers: Troy, Cecil, John, P. James Leonard Walker James Leonard "Jamie" Walker, 41, of La Porte passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. He was born December 14, 1967 in Delhi, Louisiana to Betty and J.W. Walker. He is survived by his parents, children: James Howard "Buck" Walker, John Christian Walker; sister, Betsy Denmon and husband Jim; nephew James Tyler Denmon; niece Brianna Jane Denmon; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousin, and other relatives.
