If not a record, it sure has to be close for 8-man football.

Franklin Academy defeated Christian Collegiate 6-2 Friday night in Gulfport in a game that was played mostly in a torrential rain.

"Right when we pulled in the officials told us they were going to start the game at 6:45. so we had to get dressed and get out there," said Franklin coach Doyle Hassell. "We played about four minutes before the rain hit and it was a downpour."

Franklin ((3-4) scored the lone touchdown of the game on an 8-yard run by Colton Monnin.

The Cougars had one fumble, that coming inside the Christian Collegiate 5-yard line.
Franklin took an intentional safety in the fourth quarter attempting to punt from its own 3-yard line.

"I told our punter to just kneel down, but our center told me he could snap it over his head," Hassell said. "That ball was still rising when it got to the goal post."

Chris Hassell intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the game.

"Our defense played extremely well," Doyle Hassell said. "This was a big game for us and hopefully gets us back on track."

Franklin hosts Mt. Salus Friday for Homecoming.

"Hopefully we can have some good weather because all it seems like we've been playing in all year is rain," Hassell said.
