Crowville High School Alumni meet for reunion A 'golden weekend' of fun, food and fellowship was enjoyed by the 1959 Crowville High School graduating class on September 25 and 26, 2009.
The festivities began Friday evening in Winnsboro at the home of Margaret (Arnold) Johnson and husband, J. T. The celebrants gathered on the front lawn under a huge umbrella canopied Live Oak tree, draped with Spanish moss and floored with Arkansas flagstones. The circular flowerbed around the tree was bordered with Hot Springs crystal rocks and the tree was lighted with miniature white lights. Thirty-eight guests dined under the expansive tree from a lavish buffet of hors d'oeuvres prepared by Margaret Johnson.
This was a 'meet and greet' evening for folks to get reacquainted and to catch up on the intervening years.
Midmorning Saturday, forty-three guests gathered in Crowville at the country estate of Don and Becky Parker. 'Chef Don' treated everyone to a 'good ole' fish fry and 'Chef Jim Parker' fried up the hush puppies. Various celebrants furnished all the yummy side dishes. Guests dined on the front porch veranda and the back porch sunroom.
After everyone was 'stuffed to the gills' we met at poolside for the program. Sue (Riser) Donnell paid tribute to our teachers: Mrs. Frances Lyles, Ms. Calliope Poulos and Ms. Jeanette Reynolds. R. L. Garner treated us to a few 'special stories' from high school. Jeanette (Johnson) Simmons presented a gift to the one who traveled the most miles. Faye (Davis) Bacle presented a gift to the one with the most grandchildren. Margaret (Arnold) Johnson presented gifts to the 'least changed' male and female. Margaret also presented to Jeanette (Johnson) Simmons a plaque from her classmates in deep appreciation for all her selfless dedication in organizing seven reunions and for placing memorials at the Franklin Parish Library in remembrance of their departed classmates.
The program concluded with a candle lighting ceremony conducted by Audrey (Laborde) Hoover for twelve deceased classmates. She gave the death date for each and told the circumstances of their death. Various classmates were called upon to light a memory candle for each of their former friends. The twelve deceased are by date of death: Gloria Wroten-1959, Joel Walters-1977, Billy Phillips-1979, Marion Rushing-1991, Shelby Dotson-1995, Jerry Polk-1999, Danny Donnell-2001, Frances Humphries-2005, Jimmy Hoover-2005, Ruby Sutherlin-2005, J. Q. Weatherly-2006, and Don Payne-2008.
There was a 'memory table' display featuring class photos from each of the previous reunions. Also, a three-poster board array of high school activities and snapshots from each of the reunions were on display. The original copies of the Senior Play booklet, the Graduation Program and the Senior Handbook were displayed. The posters were draped with senior cap tassels and gold honor cords. The display contained Crowville Annuals dating from 1951 through 1959. A gold and green football jacket hung above the table.
