Story Archives: Another positive step in Winnsboro

Another positive step in Winnsboro
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
In this somewhat negative world we live in today, it was a pleasure to hear some good news last week when Winnsboro Main Street manager Kay LaFrance-Knight confirmed that work to rehabilitate the old post office in downtown Winnsboro is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Financed by some $450,000 in capital outlay funding from the Legislature, the refurbished post office will house offices for Winnsboro/Franklin Parish Chamber of Commerce and Winnsboro's Main Street program. It will operate as a visitor's center for Franklin Parish, too.

For years, Winnsboro's downtown served as the commercial hub for Franklin Parish and beyond. Folks from the country visited downtown to conduct their business and to shop. That changed as people's lifestyles changed, meaning shopping centers and the like were built beyond the downtown area, drawing customers from downtown. In time, Winnsboro's downtown took a turn for the worse, and it showed.

That changed, too, thanks to a rededication of sorts among Franklin Parish residents who decided Winnsboro's downtown needed to be revitalized. And it has been revitalized.

Today, Winnsboro's downtown represents an example of what hard work and dedication can achieve when people take pride in their community. It also represents what can be accomplished when concerned citizens and elected officials desire to create a better community in which to live and work. Certainly that is what has occurred in Winnsboro.

Accordingly, rehabilitating the old post office in downtown Winnsboro represents another positive step in remaking downtown Winnsboro.
