Season opening
Some observations from LSU's season-opening win (?) at Washington Saturday.
We'll make this quick and painless and move on hopefully like the team is going to do. It will be good to have a home game back in the continental United States. (Not that there is anything wrong with the state of Washington).
Right now the Tiger offensive line is no where close to the best you have had, Les Miles.
Patrick Peterson may be the best cornerback to ever play at LSU.
Jordan Jefferson has to learn how to slide.
Don't start any season in the upper northwest of the United States (Nicholls State will probably throw in an Amen to that).
Russell Sheppard needs to get on the field.
And ESPN needs to stop with the in-game coverage and promos of halftime because they are missing too much action on the field. Most of us have been watching football all day and know what happened.
So after the first week, what 10 teams will be competing in the BCS Bowl games this season?
Go ahead and pencil in Florida and Southern California. Those two are locks.
The Gators will not lose more than one game this season and Southern Cal will tiptoe through the Pac 10 again.
After that, anything goes.
The Southeastern Conference should get another team in the mix. Whether it will be Alabama, LSU or Ole Miss is anybody's guess. Hey, Tennessee could sneak in.
Alabama and LSU will both be worthy, but having three teams in the SEC would set off Lou Holtz's blood pressure, so I am going with the Tigers (I know, I know how bad they looked Saturday and how good Alabama looked). The Tide will be the best non-BCS team in the nation. And that will start the playoff squabbling again - unfortunately to no avail again.
The Big East will get the last spot in the BCS, only because they have to. Cincinnati returns quarterback Tony Pike and wide receiver Mardy Gilyard, one of the best in the country. South Florida may sneak in there, but I'm going with the Bearcats.
Ohio State and Penn State will battle it out for the Big Ten spot. Give the edge to the Nittany Lions. But both teams will find themselves bowling in the BCS.
The Big XII will get two picks, as well. Surely Texas will not be snubbed again and Oklahoma State is ready to make that big step this year while Oklahoma looks to solve its offensive line problems. The winner of their matchup (Hook 'em Horns) will get the higher prize, but both teams will have BCS logos awaiting them in January.
That leaves the Atlantic Coast Conference as the only other automatic. Virginia Tech will make it three straight and don't be too surprised if they surprise the Tide in their opener.
Now the hard part - sorting them out one through 10.
OK, I've got my eyes closed and here goes.
Florida and Texas in the final bowl game in Pasadena.
LSU will face Oklahoma State in the Sugar Bowl.
It will be Penn State and Southern California in the Rose Bowl.
Virginia Tech will take on Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
And the lucky Orange Bowl will have Cincinnati against Ohio State. |
