Story Archives: Dragons defeated by turnovers

Dragons defeated by turnovers
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The good news for Tommy Tharp in his first game as head football coach at Mangham High was that Ouachita Christian could not stop his offense.

The bad news is that the Dragons stopped themselves with five turnovers as the Eagles flew past Mangham 40-31 Friday in Mangham.

"The tale of the tape if turnovers and we turned it over too much," Tharp said. "They never really stopped us. We were able to slow them down in the second half."

OCs scored 21 points in the first quarter after Magnum started the scoring with a 48-yard run by Montrel Hardeman.

Mangham scored twice in the second quarter as Shaquille Ausberry scored on runs of 16 and three yards to pull the Dragons to within 33-19 at halftime.

Mangham scored first in the second half as Hardeman went in from seven yards out. The Dragons pulled to within 33-31 midway through the final period as Ausberry returned a fumble 75 yards for a score.

OCS clinched the game with a 25-yard scoring pass from Paul Michael Garner to Colby Webb with 2:30 remaining.

Mangham finished with 318 rushing yards, but only 18 through the air.

"We couldn't throw the ball against their secondary with a non-throwing quarterback," Tharp said.

Hardeman had 295 yards on 20 carries.

Ausberry finished with 100 yards on 18 carries.

Garner passed for 226 yards and four TDs for the Eagles.

Mangham hosts Delhi Charter Friday.

"They are a good ball club," Tharp said. "They are big and physical. They have reached a high plateau in a short time. We have to have some big plays and try and keep our defense off the field."
