Franklin Academy picked up its first win ever in 8-man football, defeating Christian Collegiate 30-24 in Winnsboro.

"It was an exciting game and I am very proud of our young men," said Franklin coach Doyle Hassell. "We really needed this win after losing to Veritas. The kids are excited and this gives us a lot of confidence."

A 33-yard run by Nate Blackwell set up a 5-yard touchdown pass from Colton Monnin to Drew Guice.

Monnin ran in the conversion.

Monnin raced 74 yards for the Cougars second score.

Monnin ran in his second conversion.

Christian Collegiate scored twice in the second quarter to tie the game at 16-16 at halftime.

Franklin regained the lead as Rilyn Taylor intercepted a Bulldog pass and returned it 45 yards for a score.

Monnie passed to Ethan Vick on the conversion.

Guice recovered an onsides kick and the Cougars took advantage as Blackwell scored on a 36-yard scoring run.

"My kicker (Ryan Sullivan) had been pooch-kicking it and he ran over to me and told me he felt we could squib-kick it and get the ball," Hassell said. "It bounced off one of their guys' shoulder and we were able to get it. That was a big play for us."

Franklin held Christian Collegiate inside the Cougar 10-yard line to end the game, with Monnin tackling the Bulldog quarterback short of the goal line on fourth down.

"We have a lot of good defensive players," Hassell said. "They came up big several times throughout the game."

Franklin hosts Rebul Friday.

"They have good size and a real good quarterback," Hassell said. "They also have a real good wide receiver. We have to contain them and keep them from making the big plays on us."
