Patriots prepare with Rayville trip

Franklin Parish High School's football Patriots continue to make ready for the upcoming season by going from a scrimmage with a nationally ranked team to skirmishes with a nearby rival and a new district foe.

The Patriots, who survived a 20-0 lesson from West Monroe High School, last Friday, will play a two-way match against nearby Rayville and new district opponent Ruston this Friday in Rayville. The three-team mixup begins at 6 p.m.

Patriot Coach Barry Sebren says he doesn't mind mixing it up with a district foe, especially since the Patriots and Bearcats don't meet until the final regular season game this year.
Ruston, a former 5A team, dropped into the 4A class this year and is in district 2 along with Franklin Parish.

"We learned not to be too concerned about our opponents," Sebren said of the game against West Monroe, ranked 49th in the nation by one high school poll.

"What we have to be concerned with is what we can do with the basics of the game. We're trying to get better and we're only going to get better," he said.

A benefit for the Franklin squad is a lack of injuries against WMHS.

FPHS begins its season on August 28 with a Jamboree against Mangham.

A freshman game of two, eight-minute periods will begin at 7 p.m. with a varsity game of two, 15-minute periods following immediately.
