The 2009 Dixie Belles state softball championship will be decided Wednesday, July 22.

Only Jefferson Parish Recreation Department, or New Orleans, was undefeated in the double elimination tournament going into Tuesday's games.

The semifinals Tuesday matched Winnsboro against Ferriday and New Orleans against Grant Parish.

Madisonville lost to Grant, host Winnsboro eliminated Sabine, 13-10 and New Orleans beat Ferriday Monday to set up the championship match, which begins at 6 p.m. A second game, if needed, will follow immediately.

Play began last Saturday with New Orleans stopping Madisonville, 6-0; Ferriday taking Pine Prairie, 11-0; Grant Parish beating Sabine, 1-0 and Winnsboro stopping Union Parish, 7-3.

In Sunday's action, New Orleans bettered the Winnsboro 13-15 year old fast pitch all star team, 12-0 while Madisonville eliminated Union Parish and Sabine eliminated Pine Prairie. Ferriday stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Grant.

Katie Johnston came in in relief of Jaci Turner for Winnsboro in the sixth inning and struck out six of the next seven batters to spark the host team's 7-3 win over Union Parish.

Staci Cupp reached base on an error in the fifth, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Samantha Crook sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run for Winnsboro.

Winnsboro then scored three more runs in the inning with two outs to set the stage for Johnston's relief effort.

Holly Erwin went two for three for the Winnsboro team with several players getting a lone hit and on defense, Kelsey Kelly was credited with eight outs at third base.
