Story Archives: School board plans sales tax renewal

School board plans sales tax renewal

A half-cent renewal tax is scheduled to be placed on the October ballot according to school officials.

Members of the Franklin Parish School Board unanimously approved a motion to begin the process of renewing the half-cent sales tax for the term of 10 years. The services of the firm Foley and Judell have been obtained to initiate this process.

Passed in 2005 for a term of five years, board members are seeking to extend the term due to the costs associated with an election.

"It cost the school board approximately $25,000 per election if we are the only one on the ballot," said Superintendent Lanny Johnson. "We would like the tax to be renewed for 10 years as opposed to the five year plan to save the school system the expense and to keep the taxpayer from having to go to the polls so often."

Currently, the tax generates some $1,064,000 annually for maintenance and operations within the school system. The current half-cent sales tax will expire in 2010.
