Dogfights produce probation for two
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Two Winnsboro men entered a last minute guilty plea to dog fighting in Fifth District Court Tuesday and ended with three-year supervised probation in a two-year old case.

Kent Johnson, 44, and Robert L. Coleman, 41, each received five-year sentences, which were suspended for the probation.

According to court observers, a jury had been selected near the end of the day and return instructions had been given to the jury when the pair offered to plead guilty to the original felony charges.

The pair, arrested on the dog fighting charges in January 2007, were also ordered to pay $500 and court costs, $500 and costs of prosecution and split the $1,100 cost of euthanasia for a number of dogs.

An investigation leading to the arrest of the two men discovered a total of 43 pit bull dogs in two different locations.

Both Johnson, who is a school bus driver, bail bondsman and owner of the Catahoula Parish establishment Mayonaise, and Coleman were ordered not to own a pit bull dog during probation.
