Commemorative bricks...still room for more pavers Room remains in the American Legion Veterans Park for those wanting to purchase a commemorative brick honoring a parish veteran.
According to American Legion Diamond-Hawthorne Post 84 Commander Bobby Collins, over 1,800 bricks have been installed at the park located adjacent to the Davis Park recreational complex.
"This project far exceeded our original expectations, and has necessitated expansion of the space available at the memorial for more commemorative bricks," Collins said. "We've added more concrete space for more pavers because of that demand."
Orders will be taken through April 1 of this year, and the bricks will be permanently installed in the park by Memorial Day weekend.
Collins explained that the pavers currently in the park were purchased by friends and family members in honor of veterans with ties to Franklin Parish. These honorees served in the different branches of the armed services during times of peace as well as during times of conflict.
"We have bricks honoring veterans dating back to the War of 1812, as well as the Civil War," he said. "We also have some bricks honoring those serving in Desert Storm, as well as those currently serving in Iraq."
Cost for each paver is $75.
Collins, who also serves as the Franklin Parish Veterans Affairs officer, said that the original plans for the park allowed space for 1,000 bricks, but a larger than expected demand necessitated the enlargement of the facility to accommodate more brick pavers.
"The people in our area showed a tremendous interest in this project," he said. "Because of its location near the children's playground, the park gets a great deal of traffic."
"We're certainly proud of our park, and encourage those who haven't visited to do so," Collins said. He also noted that the park is maintained through the efforts of the local American Legion post along with donations from civic groups and individuals.
Those interested in purchasing a commemorative brick paver to honor any veteran with Franklin Parish ties may do so by contacting Bobby Collins, c/o Veterans Affairs Office, P. O. Box 81, Winnsboro, Louisiana, 71295.
