Story Archives: Patriots earn playoff berth

Patriots earn playoff berth
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Franklin Parish Patriots (25-8) are preparing for the Class 4A playoffs after a 84-79 win over Pickering High School at Caldwell on Saturday.

Brandon Sims scored 23 points to lead the Patriots to their fifth victory in their last six games.

With the win, the Patriots sit at No.17 in the latest Ken Ramsey power rankings released Sunday.

All classes learned their status for the playoffs Tuesday when the official brackets were released.

The Patriots would have to travel in the first round and could be headed to Opelousas for the opening round of the playoffs.

Against Pickering, Franklin Parish fell behind and fought back to take the game even with Jason Isaac leading all players with 29 points.

The Patriots set a fast pace which gave them easy transition baskets and their free throw conversions down the stretch secured the victory.

The win gives the Patriots some much needed momentum going into the playoffs. The Patriots were in second place in the district going into the final week of the season and knew they could do no worse. Carroll's Bulldogs rallied for wins over Neville and Bastrop to narrowly clip the Patriots out of first for the district 2-4A title.

The year was still one of the most productive of the season for the Patriots who still face the adversity of a first round road trip, if power rankings do not change before next Tuesday.

On Friday, defending Class 4A state champion Helen Cox forfeited 20 wins because of use of an ineligible player. The incident will keep Helen Cox out of the playoffs this season.

Carroll is in line for a home game and Neville appears to be the last team in the field of 32 this season.
