The Cougars baseball team at Franklin Academy is off to a hot start after sweeping through the beginning of their 2009 season.

Tucker Ellington (1-0) picked up the victory in the season opener last Tuesday as Franklin Academy (3-0) squeezed by Adams County Christian School 4-3.

A two-run home run by senior Dusty Barefield was the decisive play for the Cougars as the pitching was nearly flawless from Ellington.

"We are real young in some spots," Franklin Academy head coach Ryan Ellington said. "The pitching performances have been real impressive so far. We have a lot of games this week to get better."

On Wednesday, the Cougars beat Wilkinson County Christian Academy by a score of 3-2. Ryne Ford pitched three-hit ball on the way to his first victory of the season for Franklin Academy.

Friday the Cougars ended their opening week with an impressive 6-3 victory over Huntington. Dustin Carroll picked up the victory as the Cougars totaled their best run support for the pitching staff.

Dickey Field will host the Franklin Academy tournament beginning Wednesday afternoon. The tournament will feature a number MPSA schools.

Action will end with the championship game Saturday evening in Winnsboro.
