FMC to offer A-HEC of a Summer in 2009 Area students interested in pursuing a health career will have the opportunity to explore the medical field during North Louisiana AHEC's 2009 A-HEC of a Summer Health Careers Volunteer Program.
Students will volunteer approximately 100 hours of their time and energy to explore a variety of health occupations. The A-HEC of a Summer Program allows area high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to rotate through different departments in Franklin Medical Center to experience health careers firsthand. In addition to these rotations, students will participate in workshops and field trips to other healthcare facilities and universities in the area.
The goal of A-HEC of a Summer is to help high school students gain a greater understanding of health careers that will assist them in making informed decisions concerning their professional goals.
Participating students will earn ½ unit of high school credit, CPR certification and have the opportunity to participate in other AHEC training programs.
This unique volunteer program is one of several community-based health career enticement programs coordinated and sponsored by North Louisiana AHEC. This "grow your own" philosophy is a grassroots effort to assist local communities find a long-term strategy to solving their workforce concerns. This program is an extensive collaboration made up of 29 facility training sites and over 87 partner organizations including school boards, schools, tech prep consortiums, state agencies and medical facilities. The AHEC of a Summer Program is currently providing summer learning opportunities in 21 parishes throughout North Louisiana.
To apply for the Franklin Medical center A-Hec of a Summer Program, students may obtain an application from their high school counselor or may download the application from the NLAHEC website at: www.hlahec.org. The application deadline is April 1, 2009.
