Powder Puffs... You know how college basketball teams schedule those powder puff games early to get ready for the season? Duke against Presbyterian, North Carolina against NC-Pembroke and UCLA versus Mississippi Valley.
That's kind of the way I feel about the most of the matchups in the 2009-10 bowl season.
Except there are powder puffs playing powder puffs and in most cases I don't care about either team. I doubt seriously the teams playing in the magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl, Motor City Bowl, EagleBank Bowl would have a chance to even make the NIT.
Before we look at the bowl picture, how complicated would Oklahoma against Alabama, Florida against Texas Tech, Texas against Penn State, Southern California against Utah be for a playoff system this year?
Instead we have that exciting EagleBank Bowl with Wake Forest taking on Navy. At least Navy will have an easier time finding Wake Forest players than they did finding Army players with their camoflauge uniforms. Actually I thought those were cool. But I think Army guys actually had a harder time finding Army guys in that game.
The New Mexico Bowl has Colorado State going against Fresno State. And you blame the turkey for making you sleepy.
Memphis meets South Florida in the magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl. I'm tuning in just to see what the heck magicJack is.
Florida Atlantic against Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl? When does American Idol start?
Hawaii hosts Notre Dame in the Sherton Hawaii Bowl. Yeah, that should help Charlie Weis' recruiting. Wait, it's not the recruiting part that has Weis stumped, he still finishes in the top five. It's the actual game itself.
And doesn't Buffalo against Connecticut, Nevada versus Maryland and East Carolina taking on Kentucky make you want to go out and splurge on popcorn and soft drinks?
Georgia needs to beat Michigan State in the Capital One or Big Ten fans will be giving SEC fans a lot of grief for the next nine months. It does get a little better down with Ole Miss against Texas Tech (man, the real Greg Hardy better show up for this game for the Rebels) and LSU against Georgia Tech (depending on which seniors show up for LSU and if Gary Crowton lets Jordan Jefferson actually PLAY in this contest).
We'll touch on the Tigers at a later time.
And there is a lot of interest in the Louisiana Tech-Northern Illinois game around here and there would have been more statewide if the Indy Bowl would have done the right thing and asked Louisiana-Lafayette to take on the Bulldogs.
It's a late Christmas present for Tech fans as the Bulldogs will be bowl champs.
OK, let's move ahead before I get too much more depressed and start wishing for the NBA playoffs.
Alabama is too fast, too big and too good for Utah. The Utes faithful will be hitting Bourbon Street faster than LSU fans this past season this night.
Penn State will give Southern Cal a defensive battle in the Rose Bowl.
Texas against Ohio State might have been good the last couple of years but I'm hoping the Horns bash the Buckeyes to further discredit the BCS. And now to the big one (no Sanford and Son will have to wait another night). Oklahoma versus Florida should be a classic.
I just hate both teams had to wait so long to play the game. I guess the television networks need more time to promote the game (everything else is about television).
You'll know more about Oklahoma and Florida than you ever could have imagined by the time this one comes around. And if you think even this game does not have a local angle - try again.
The father of Florida twins Maurkice and Michael Pouncey is Robert Webster, who played guard at Sicily Island in the mid 1980s. Thanks to Block coach Benny Vault for that one. This will be one of those back-and-foth contests, but I think Urban Meyer will fall just short of his second national title. I still can't understand Meyer not calling time out when his Gator team was up 17-10 on Alabama in the SEC Championship game with over a minute to play in the half and with all the timeouts left.
Meyer chose to let the clock run to go into the locker room with the lead rather than call a timeout before the Bama punt.
Florida ended up getting the ball on its own 31 with 14 seconds left when it could've been able to go for late points had there been time left on the clock.
I think one of those type decisions will make the difference in this game and OU will make a miserable offseason for Texas even more miserable by beating the Gators for the title.
It will be a great game. But after what we will have to go through to get there, we will deserve it. |
