Scouts enjoy "Roar and Snore" at the zoo

The local Cub Scout pack was treated to a special night at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. The boys of Pack 53 were the first official Cub Scout Pack to participate in the Roar and Snore camp-in at the zoo.

The boys began the fun-filled night with an animal encounter hosted by Mr. David Daniels. Daniels is a wildlife rehabilitator and former agent with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. He introduced the scouts to the Barred Owl, the great Horned Owl and a Screech Owl, which the campers got to pet. Daniels taught the scouts much about the habits, diet and anatomy of these great birds. He also stressed the importance of conservation, backyard habitats and recycling. The boys learned great respect for these beautiful creatures.

The education curator, Kim Walker, then led the scouts in lots of fun activities. The boys made pinecone bird feeders, gallon jug bird and squirrel feeders, owl masks, tree bark necklaces and a Thanksgiving craft. The scouts also painted and constructed their very own birdhouses to create a backyard habitat at home.

The evening was capped off by a midnight safari through the zoo! There were lots of howls from coyotes and scouts alike. The cold evening provided a perfect environment for the trek. The boys then made their way back to the education building for a night of camping in. The staff of the Louisiana Purchase Garden and Zoo was helpful, informative and packed with great ideas. The scouts of pack 53 were a well-behaved group of young men. They set a wonderful example as representatives of Winnsboro and of scouting and all that it stands for.
