Story Archives: Gilbert Junior High names new mascot

Gilbert Junior High names new mascot
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Change is a popular word in our society right now. Gilbert Junior High is pleased to announce a historical change at the school. As of Nov. 1, 2008, the official mascot name for GJHS is "Flying Tigers."

During the month of October, a survey was sent home with each student asking for responses from students, family members and community members. Copies of the survey were also available in various locations and posted on the school web site. Approximately 70 percent of all responses received were in favor of adopting a new mascot for the school. At a faculty meeting, the majority of the faculty and staff voted to change the mascot to "Flying Tigers."

The original Flying Tigers were members of the American Volunteer Group, fighter pilots who served in China During World War II. General Claire Chennault, who attended school in Gilbert where he also grew up, commanded these brave men. The planes they flew were Curtiss P-40E "Warhawks." The noses of the planes were painted with teeth and eyes to resemble a growling tiger. Even though some insignia designed later included a tiger with wings, flying through a large "V" for victory, the Flying Tigers were not mythical creatures, but brave American pilots who fought fierce battles in the skies over China during the war.

"Flying Tigers" was chosen as our new mascot because of the historical connection the Gilbert community has to general Claire Lee Channault and his Flying Tiger Squadron. The school colors will not be changed, only the mascot.

Now it is time to find the right design for our new mascot logo and there is going to be a contest open to all artists, including students, parents, faculty and members of the community. All drawings should be submitted to the school office or a member of the GJHS Mascot Committee no later than Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. Committee members are, Julie Carrington, Sandy Englerth, Helen Johnson, Ronda Lloyd and Sandy Rigdon. Entries will be evaluated, the top three will be chosen, then the students and faculty at GJHS will be allowed to vote on their choice.

Anyone interested in submitting a design, please consider the historical background of the original Flying Tigers. Entries should be done in color on 8 ½ by 11" unlined paper. Be sure the artist's name, address and contact numbers are on the back of the design.
