Story Archives: Gilbert sewer upgrade pending

Gilbert sewer upgrade pending

About 20 residents on the north side of the Town of Gilbert stand to benefit from a pending sewer system upgrade expected to be completed next summer.

Town officials and contractors are putting final touches to administrative steps which will release the needed $400,000 from the Louisiana Department of Community Development.

Gilbert applied for the sewer upgrading grant to the state. Funds come from Housing and Urban Development resources through the state to the town.

"The project includes annexing some 20 homes along the north side of Highway 15 coming into town," said Oliver Schulz, a consultant from Monroe.

"We hope to advertise for bids in the near future," he said, "with completion sometime during the summer."

Between 3-4,000-feet of eight-inch pipe will be needed to connect the homes, which are not on community sewer.

Bid specifications will also detail the upgrades needed to a north side pumping station to handle increased volume.

Residents should see improvements quickly after the project is complete.
"Almost all of the grey water standing in ditches will be removed," said Schulz, "and most of the odor associated with sewer discharge will go away"
