Mangham edges Jonesboro-Hodge It wasn't a district contest, but Mangham's 17-10 win over Class 2A Jonesboro-Hodge was just as impressive and important.
Mangham, which is rated No. 3 in Class A in power points by kenramsey.com, improved to 8-1. It's only loss was to Ouachita Christian in its season-opener.
OCS is rated No. 2 in Class A behind South Plaquemines.
J-H, which defeated Mangham last year 64-51, led 3-0 at halftime on George Palmer's 30-yard field goal with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
"We played great defense, but we made some mistakes offensively," said Mangham coach Bo Meeks.
Mangham got on the scoreboard early in the third on a 17-yard run by Edward Blount. Kyle King added the conversion kick.
J-H came back seven minutes later to go on top again as LaTydrick Lawrence scored on a 6-yard run and Brandon Jonnson kicked the PAT. Mangham closed the gap to a single point on a safety produced by Jeffery Watkins with 7:43 left.
The Dragons got the game-winner on a nine-yard run by Blount with 3:45 left.
Shaquille Ausberry added the two-point run conversion for the final 17-10 score.
Blount led the Dragons with 129 yards rushing in 10 tries while quarterback Josh Wilson completed 6-of-14 passes but had two picked off and gained just 36 yards.
Mangham visits Delhi Charter, considered the preseason district favorite on Friday. Delhi Charter is 8-1, with its only loss coming to Oak Grove in district.
"We have a chance to win the district outright," Meeks said. "We just need to protect the football and on defense get some three and outs to get them off the field because they like to control the clock with their running game. We have to play fast and utilize our speed."
Mangham will be assured of at least a No. 3 seeding in the playoffs with a win.
"That's unbelievable that we were No. 30 playing a No. 3 last year and here we are at No. 3 right now," Meeks said. |
