Residents collect without office

Individuals in Franklin Parish have collected more than $500,000 in disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency without the presence of a Disaster Recovery Center here.

Mitch Reynolds, director of the Franklin Parish Office of Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness, got the news and figures at a special meeting Monday.

A total of 1,060 parish residents are listed in FEMA computers as disaster applicants. A breakdown of how many have been served and how many remain to be served was not given during the FEMA meeting in West Monroe.

FEMA funds paid to residents, as of Monday, included $381,982 for direct assistance for home damages and $174,783 for other personal assistance, according to Reynolds.

"FEMA has had contractors in the area for the past 10 days," he said. "And, all this was done before they even opened an office here."
