Jury hopes cause will thwart bugs

Hopes that the cause can be the cure is the Franklin Parish Police Jury's position on the current mosquito problem.

After two special meetings last week where mosquito abatement was the major topic, jurors decided to continue with the current spraying schedule of five nights a week.

Weather conditions, headed by Hurricane Gustav winds and rains, were blamed for making mosquito problems worse in the past several weeks and jurors were willing to gamble on expected cooler weather and less rain to help reduce the insect population.

Potential costs and time also figured into the jury's decision to stay the course—with regard to mosquito control.

Costs estimates were as much as $1.97 per acre for aerial spray but up to two weeks would be needed to organize application for the nearly 18,000 acres where most parish residents live.

Aerial spraying would cost nearly $36,000 each time.

Jury members also considered effectiveness of the two application methods, ground and aerial spray before deciding to continue with the current method. Both have limited duration times and are effective only against flying mosquitoes.

Currently the parish sends out three trucks each weeknight, beginning just before dusk.
