Gators looking for big season

As the pads are popping all over the south in preparation for the coming season of fun on the gridiron, excitement is at a fever pitch in the community surrounding the Delhi Charter Gators.

Head Coach Brett Raley has been busy concentrating on putting his the finishing touches on his depth chart. The Gators are trying to improve on the incredible 10-2 run from a year ago.

Depth is always a concern on any team in the lower classifications of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. The Gators will begin the season with quarterback Stuart Scurria doubling as a starting safety.

While Scurria plays in the defensive backfield and goes under center, Hunter Sims is the other Gator playing double duty. Sims will anchor the linebackers group that will play a key role in the development of the Delhi Charter defensive unit.

Zac Bembenick and Justin Ford will be lining up with Sims at linebacker. The defensive front four of DCS will consist of Curt Winstead Reggie Carroll at tackle and Doug Craig and Riccie Gray lining up at defensive end.

Heath Pruitt will go with Scurria out to the safety position. Gabe Robinson and Brantley Mathieu are currently penciled in as starters at corner back for the Gators.

Randy Julian may have the most daunting task of all players at DCS. Julian will be counted on to fill the void left by the graduation of Brandon Hardy at the running back position. He has not disappointed the coaches with his work ethic to this point.

"Randy (Julian) has added about fifth teen pounds of muscle this summer" Brett Raley said. "He will probably sweat that extra weight off at practice though."

The biggest concern for the DCS coaching staff heading toward the jamboree and season opener at 1-A powerhouse Cedar Creek on Sept. 5 is the left side of the offensive line.

Josh Wallace and Kyle Hammonds are battling to earn a starting spot at left guard.

"Josh (Wallace) and Kyle (Hammonds) are close right now," Raley said. "They are competing and we have to get some consistency and good play from that side of the line."

The tackles are going to be Drew Lewis and Corey Reece for the Gators. Reggie Carroll and Hunter Pruitt will line-up at right guard and center, respectively.
