Story Archives: Jail time added for sign theft

Jail time added for sign theft
by Hope Young - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Fed up with the constant stealing of road and street signs, the Franklin Parish Police Jury voted Thursday to toughen the ordinance, adding three days mandatory jail time to the $1,000 fine.

In June the jury passed an ordinance for the fine, but at that time the jail time was unspecified.

Jury president Harvey Ray Guimbellot said he'd cleared the jail time with Sheriff Steve Pylant.

Guimbellot, who has spearheaded the campaign to stop the sign stealing, stressed again to the jury the seriousness of not having road signs for emergency vehicles and fire trucks.

"Gentlemen, we are missing a lot of signs," Guimbellot said. "There is going to be a problem."

The revised ordinance specifies the fine and jail time will be for anyone caught damaging signs or poles, stealing or in possession of the signs.

The jury will pay a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of sign stealers.
