Cougars run over Briarfield in first scrimmage of season By Cody Futrell Sun Sports
The Franklin Academy Cougars rode the strong performance of its starting offense to score twice in a twenty-play scrimmage against the Briarfield Rebels Friday night in Winnsboro.
Briarfield was able to push the football across the goal-line once during the scrimmage against the starting defense of the Cougars.
"Defensively we played pretty well," FA head coach Keith Tincknell said. "We ran the ball pretty well during the scrimmage."
A group of freshmen will apparently become quick stars on the football field for Franklin Academy. Desmond Evans and Walker Magee impressed coaches with their play-making ability for the Cougars.
"I really felt like Toby Ziegler did well," Tincknell said. "He had a good game on defense for us."
While the Cougars rushing attack was shining on the field Friday, turnovers are a chief concern as fumbles and exchanges between the center and quarterback could hold the offense at FA back this season.
"We have to do a better job of center-to-quarterback exchange," Tincknell said. "We turned the ball over too much."
With three fumbles and numerous bad exchanges, the Cougars will work a lot on improving ball handling in practice this week.
With the season just days away, the coaches are preaching the importance of turnovers during a game. The offense must hold onto the ball, allowing the defense a chance to make a game-changing play when it takes the field.
In the MPSA, football is right here upon us. Franklin Academy will hold a jamboree on Aug. 15. The Cougars begin the regular season on Aug. 22. |
