Story Archives: Local man finds giant beaver dam

Local man finds giant beaver dam

Allen Butler of Winnsboro said he knew there was a big beaver dam near his hunting club in Tensas Parish when he saw the top of it sticking out of the Mississippi River backwater in the spring. He said it looked as high as the top of a car, but he was skeptical.

"I kept thinking, 'Lord, I think I see the top of a beaver dam,' " Butler said, almost not believing his own eyes.

Butler said then the water was too high to reach the structure to investigate, so he had no choice but to watch and wait until the river went down.

"The water was over deer stands 12 feet tall, so I knew it had to be at least that high," Butler said. "I still thought maybe it was up on a hill."

Butler found out differently when he and his grandson, Garrett Kra-mer, 11, ventured to the spot between St. Joseph and Waterproof and waded through shallow water reach to the dam.

"I'd seen the water dropping and knew we could get back there," he said.

Butler estimated the dam is about 16 feet high and 25 to 30 feet wide.

"I put Garrett on a log in front of it and took a picture so people could see just how big it is," Butler said.
