'Fiddler' cast, crew prepare for opening

Only a few days away from the first curtain call, the cast, musicians and crew of the Princess Theatre's "Fiddler on the Roof" are rehearing several hours a day at the theatre in historic downtown Winnsboro.

This summer's musical production opens Thurs-day, July 31 and runs through August 4, with shows at 7 p.m. To reserve tickets ($15 adults, $12 children 12 and under) call the Princess at 435-6299 or (800) 435-6299; email princesstheatre-@bellsouth.net or www.princesstheatreinc.com.

This year's cast includes Dr. Jimmy Coughran in the lead role of Tevye with Honny Eldridge playing the part of his wife Golde. Also in the production are Betsy Lowe, Kyle Ann Kaufman, Elizabeth Ellington, Sarah Head, Meg Stephens, Nelda Emfinger, Joey Cordill, David Stephens, Michael Harris, Scott Knight, Bill Jonson and the Rev. Johnny Hankins.

Also, Nate Roberts, Barry Stevens, Wade Walley, Faith Stephens, Judge Jimbo Stephens, Dakota Stephens, Allen Michael Emfinger, Kai Killingsworth, Byron Humphrey, Dr. George Gowan, Mary Bess Haynes and Riley Russell.

The production is co-produced and co-directed by Gene Thompson and Leigh Jonson. Jonson is also musical director and musician, along with Noble Ellington III.

With strong sub-plots, ranging from the expulsion of Jews from Russia in the early years of the 20th century to the struggle between generations over religious traditions, the goal of the father, Tevye, is to marry-off three of his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava. Without giving away the plot, father and daughters don't agree on who they should marry.

The production is a mix of comedy and drama, with messages as true now as they were more than 100 years ago.

Princess programs are supported by a grant from the La. Division of the Arts in cooperation with the La. State Arts Council as administered by the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council. Local sponsorship is by Winnsboro State Bank.
