Deep South, kid's rodeo coming to town

The kick-off event for the 51st annual Deep South Rodeo is Friday, July 25 with the Kid's Rodeo. There will be events for young rodeo riders from babies to 18-year-olds.

Then next week the Deep South Rodeo marches into town for a three-day stay beginning with the traditional parade at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. Rodeo events continue Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2.

The Deep South Rodeo and Kid's Rodeo is sponsored locally by Dennis Crain Dodge, Croplan Genetics, Winnsboro Equipment Co., and Louisiana Lottery.

Kid's Rodeo

The Kid's Rodeo sign-up is at 6 p.m. Friday and riding starts at 7 p.m.

The youth age groups are 0-7, 8-12 and 13-18. The events include barrels ($10), poles ($10) and speed ($10).

On Saturday, July 26, the signup is again at 6 p.m., with the events starting at 7 p.m. Muttin' bustin' ($5) for children through age 6 is the first event, followed by calf riding ($10) for ages 7 and 8, junior steer riding ($10) for 9 through 13-year-olds and team roping ($10) for ages 18 and under.

There will be no lead-ins for these events. No refunds will be made on rainouts.

The events will be at the rodeo arena on Loop Road. Admission is $2 for adults and children under age 18 are free.


Deep South Rodeo

The Classic Pro Rodeo Company of Scotty Lovelace from Waskom, Texas, will again provide the livestock for the rodeo. Lovelace has brought quality animals to PRCA for many years, including bulls, calves and broncos – plus sheep for the Muttin' Bustin'.

Performances will be nightly – July 31 through August 2 – at 8 p.m. Admission at the gate is $11 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Advanced tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased at Sullivan's Feed and Western Wear and Dennis Crain Dodge.

Rudy Burns the "Crazy Cajun" returns this year as rodeo clown. Burns is a Louisiana native who has been entertaining rodeo fans since the 1970s.

BRONC BUSTING is always a crowd-pleaser at the Deep South Rodeo. The Kid's Rodeo is Friday and Saturday with registration at 6 p.m. and riding at 7 p.m. The Deep South Rodeo is July 31 - August 2 at 8 p.m. nightly All events are at the Winnsboro Arena on Loop Road. (Sun photo by Monica Huff)
