The Princess Theatre is flexing is artistic muscles by presenting the beloved Broadway musical and later big-screen film "Fiddler on the Roof" as its 2008 summer production.

"Fiddler" is set in Tsarist Russia and chronicles the struggle of Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman, trying to marry off his five daughters. It is a tale of love, matchmaking, persecution and, above all, tradition.

It's become a tradition for the Princess to reach ever deeper into the talent of the community to bring a production of this caliber to Winnsboro.

"We are so pleased to have such a wonderful talent pool to draw from and this production will be no exception," said executive director Gene Thompson.

Performances are scheduled July 31 through August 4 in the historic downtown theater, and it isn't too early to think about getting tickets.

Admission is by series membership or by ticket purchase at the Princess Theatre Box Office. Tickets to the general public go on sale July 15 and are $15 for ages 12 and above while ages 11 and under is $10. For more information contact the Princess at 318-435-6299 or by email at princesstheatre@bellsouth.net.

The cast and crew are in rehearsals now, polishing their voices for such classics as "Sunrise, Sunset," and "If I Were a Rich Man."

Thompson and Leigh Jonson are co-producing and directing "Fiddler. Jonson is also musical director and musician, along with Noble Ellington III.

This year's cast includes Dr. Jimmy Coughran in the lead role of Tevye with Honny Eldridge playing the part of his wife Golde. Also in the production are Betsy Lowe, Kyle Ann Kaufman, Elizabeth Ellington, Sarah Head, Meg Stephens, Nelda Emfinger, Joey Cordill, David Stephens, Michael Harris, Scott Knight, Bill Jonson, Rev Johnny Hankins, Nate Roberts, Barry Stevens, Wade Walley, Faith Stephens, Judge Jimbo Stephens, Dakota Stephens, Allen Michael Emfinger, Kai Killingsworth, Byron Humphrey, and Dr. George Gowan, Mary Bess Haynes and Riley Russell.
Thompson said rehearsing is almost as much fun as performing, especially with an enthusiastic and dedicated cast.

"We just always have a blast getting things ready and rehearsed. I encourage anyone interested to be a part of the theatre," said Thompson. "It's also very time consuming and takes commitment. Producing and directing a play like 'Fiddler' isn't easy and I'm so lucky to have great people around."
