Sports movies
The American Film Institute released its top 10 movies in several categories last week.
After looking over the top 10 sports movies of all time I have to wonder if someone didn't spike their $5 cup of Coke. Or maybe their cell phones were ringing too much during their discussion.
Then again, I didn't see "Big Jake" or "True Grit" (even as bad as Glen Campbell was) listed among their top 10 list on Westerns, so what do you expect).
"Raging Bull" was at the top of the list, and while that was certainly a great movie, I would have another boxing movie - No. 2 "Rocky" - in front of it. And while "Rocky" would be in my top 10, it would not be No 1.
The "Pride of the Yankees" was No. 2 and that certainly was a superb movie about Lou Gehrig and I would love it see it again after reading Jonathan Eig's book on Gehrig.
"Bull Durham" was listed at No. 5, followed by "The Hustler" (are you serious?), "Caddyshack," "Breaking Away," "National Velvet" (get real!) and "Jerry Maguire" (that's one extreme to the other).
Obviously, these people have not been to many football games. Surprised they didn't throw one of those "Air Bud" movies in there.
I'm surprised Billy Crystal has not acted in a sports movie. He did direct 61.
My top movie is "Rudy." I'm not a big Notre Dame fan, but I love this movie. I've seen it about 50 times and can't keep pushing the remote when I still run across it.
"Remember the Titans" comes in at No. 2 for me.
I became a Denzel Washington when he played on St. Elsewhere and he continues to be one of my favorites.
"Rocky" is No. 3. Yo Adrian.
"Hoosiers" is No. 4 and that is one of my favorite all-time sports movies. Gene Hackman was born to act as a coach.
"The Sandlot" is my No. 5. Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia.
"Friday Night Lights" is No. 6 on my list, even though the movie put a little twist on the book, having Permian play Carter in the finals instead of the semifinals. There were other changes to spice up the movie, but still a very good movie with good football action.
"Pride of the Yankees" comes in at No. 7.
"Radio" comes in at No. 8. As good as Cuba Gooding was in "Jerry Maguire," he was awesome in "Radio."
"Brian's Song" is my ninth all-time favorite. "Yep, we're gonna name her Black Magic" is a classic moment.
"Breaking Away" completes my list. Paul Dooley is awesome as "Papa."
There are certainly several more deserving of mentioning such as "The Program," "Seabiscuit," "The Natural," "Major League (just for Bob Uecker)," "Field of Dreams," "We Are Marshall," "Facing the Giants," "The Longest Yard" (the first one), "Knute Rockne," "All American" and "The Rookie."
That's my list and I'm sticking to it. Or is that the popcorn on the floor? |
