FA cheerleaders excell at camp
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Franklin Academy varsity cheerleading squad recently attended UCA Cheer Camp at Louisiana Tech and earned several awards and honors. The camp consisted of four days of intensive instruction in cheers, dances, stunts and sideline chants and nightly evaluations of specific material learned each day.

The first day of camp was spent learning the all-star cheer and extreme routine as well as other material. The extreme routine is a dance with incorporated students, which each squad must choreograph. The second day, more dances and cheers were taught along with new stunting techniques.

The third day was "Sports Rally" day, which gave the girls ideas for pep rallies for the upcoming football and basketball seasons. On the last night of camp, six girls from each squad were given the opportunity to try out for UCA All-Stars. The camp championships were held the last day of camp.

Franklin Academy earned superior ribbons for each and every evaluation at camp.
The girls placed third in champion extreme routine, second in champion cheer and were voted by the UCA staff to be the "top banana" overall for the week. The top banana goes to the most spirited and fun group of the week. Franklin Academy was also voted by the other squads as the leadership award winner for the week.

The leadership award is UCA's highest honor as it is voted on by the girls' peers. It is give to the group the other cheerleaders would most wish to be a part of and the squad who demonstrates the best overall leadership at camp.

Franklin Academy had three girls selected for UCA All-Stars. They were Janna Wilson, Lauren Hassell and Savannah Shipman. Franklin Academy was the only squad to have more than two members selected to all-stars. Additionally, Kaitlyn McManus won the jump-off competition and Kyle Ann Kaufmann won the dance off competition.

The Franklin Academy squad consists of seniors Janna Wilson, captain, Stephani Stephens, Kaitlyn McManus and Beth Padgett; juniors Savannah Shipman, co-captain, Kelsey Taylor, Lauren Hassell, Lainey Wilson, Katie Gehl, Sydni Wolleson, Hanna Southern, Elizabeth Ellington and Victoria Easterling; and sophomore Kyle Ann Kaufman. The cheer coaches/sponsors are Laura Hassell and Christy McManus.
