2008 Louisiana State Smallbore Rifle Silhouette Championship The Winnsboro Gun Club recently hosted the 2008 Louisiana State Smallbore Rifle Silhouette Championship for the eighteenth year in a row. Organized by founding members David McLemore and Jerry Breithaupt, both of Winnsboro, the event has grown to be the largest state competition in the United States.
"It gets bigger and better every year," said Breithaupt, "everyone pitches in to make this event such a success and we look forward to it all year."
Participants travel to Winnsboro from across the US for the three-day event, capacitating hotels in Franklin Parish, Richland Parish and a few in Ouachita Parish. "We had 45 shooters to enter the first competition," said McLemore, "this year, we had 212."
For the past five years, participants were asked to save their receipts from purchases in Winnsboro and Franklin Parish during the three-day event. The receipts average between $110,000 to $125,000 spent in the parish over the weekend.
"This event brings a lot of money into the area," said McLemore, "and people are arriving earlier and earlier every year, so that average will grow."
Prizes totaling $50,000 were awarded during the final day of relay matches. World champion Kathy Winstead was named Louisiana State Champion in both Standard and Hunter Rifle categories, scoring 74/80 in both matches.
"Winnsboro is a great place to hold the state championship," said Winstead, "the people we have met over the years are so hospitable and the facilities at the Winnsboro Gun Club are top-notch."
The three-day event is a combination of down-home party and competition for the whole family. Several father / son teams competed for the national championship this year including Troy Lawton and son, Kevin Lawton from Columbus, Ga., and Mark Godley and Corey Godley of Ft. Worth, Texas.
"This is a family-oriented event," said Lawton "you just don't get that every where you go and few matches have as many competitors or the chance to win such great prizes as this one does."
Robert Massey of Ft. Worth, Texas competes as a shooter and a spotter and has served as coach for over 30 championships. Massey has competed in Winnsboro for the last 17 years.
"I enjoy the camaraderie the most," said Massey, "this is a priority event for me because of the people I have met through the years at these competitions. And the businesses are so supportive here, it really makes the experience a memorable one."
