The city of Winnsboro has been awarded a $600,000 Louisiana Community Development Block Grant (LCDBG), Mayor Jack Hammons announced at the regular city council meeting June 16.
"I got a call from Sen. Neil Riser's office informing me that we received the $600,000 block grant which will be used for street improvements," Hammons said.
In a letter from Gov. Bobby Jindal to Hammons confirming to grant, the governor stated, "These funds will be used to reconstruct four and rehabilitate 14 streets in the southern area of the city. … Congratulations and I wish you every success in implementing your project."
"This will stretch our street tax funds," Hammons said. "It is designated for streets in low income areas."
Most of the streets will be entirely overlaid, but some will be partially depending on the condition of the street and other factors.
The streets include, Steel Street , Landauer Street, Eighth Street, Roland Street, Glover Drive, Baldwin Drive, Western Street, Cypress Street, Ellis Street, Seventh Street, Pine Street (south end), Grayson Street, Donnell Street, Havard Street (east end), Ruth Street, Isabell Street, Carver (east loop) and Fourth Street.
Information from city hall said other streets needing repairs will be included in the first phase of bidding, using the dedicated street tax funds. Both project are planned to be bid at the same time.
The LCDBG awards and administers federal financial assistance to units of general local government in federally-designated areas of the state in order to further develop communities and improve the quality of life of its citizens.
