Freedom Fest July 4 at Davis Park Preparations are almost complete for the 2008 Freedom Fest, which will come to Franklin Parish's Davis Park on the morning of July 4.
Sponsored by area businesses in conjunction with the Winnsboro-Franklin Chamber of Commerce, Freedom Fest is an annual Independence Day Celebration featuring local musicians, foods, games and a number of competitions for residents.
Chamber President Kevin Cobb said this year's Freedom Fest features a lot of family-oriented activities and events.
"It'll be a great time for the whole family to come out and celebrate Independence Day," Cobb said.
Event organizer Emily Arnold pointed to the number of events and said there will be something for everyone.
"We have a pie-baking contest, a children's parade, a watermelon seed spitting contest, as well as a horseshoe throwing contest. Also, we'll have a children's coloring contest."
In the coloring contest, children will be invited to color selections of drawings, which they can then enter into a contest. The winner will be announced during the festivities.
Arnold said organizers wanted to make sure people didn't forget those that have made freedom possible, so Freedom Fest 2008 will include a special tribute.
"We'll be recognizing our local veterans," Arnold said.
Visitors to Freedom Fest will be treated to music from some of the area's best musical talent. Also, revelers can enjoy hotdogs and soft drinks. "
It'll be just a really fun time for the whole family to come out and enjoy," Arnold said.
Freedom Fest will kick off with the Children's Parade at 10 a.m.
Those children who wish to participate should gather at 9:30 a.m. at Davis Park, with their bicycles decorated.
Cobb said families concerned about keeping weekend travel plans shouldn't worry.
"Freedom Fest will wrap up shortly after lunch so that everyone can go and enjoy 4th of July weekend," Cobb said. |
