Story Archives: School renewal tax on July 19 ballot

School renewal tax on July 19 ballot

Members of the Franklin Parish School Board voted unanimously at a spring meeting to place the renewal of a 4.45 mill property tax on the July 19 ballot.

Voters in Franklin Parish renewed the 4.45 millage four years ago. The only difference is the millage will be for 10 years.

"This is not a new tax," said Supt. Lanny Johnson, "this is a millage tax that's been renewed through the years since before 1940. We'd like to have it renewed for 10 years as opposed to five, because it seems we're having to vote on a renewal tax every two or three years."

The current millage expires on December 31, 2008. According to Rod Elrod of the Franklin Parish Tax Assessor's Office, the millage raised just under $240,000 for the school district in 2007.

Also, during a special meeting held on June 5, members of the board unanimously accepted a bid of $3.5 million proposed by Mann Construction Co. of Monroe, for the renovations at the Franklin Parish High School.

Johnson said construction on the new wing and the installation of new floors and ceilings at the high school should begin in a week.
