New school to open What began as a quest for a unified church vision has led to the opening of a new Christian elementary and junior high school in Franklin Parish.
Family Community Church pastor Marlin Betts had challenged the church to find a focus for their outward ministries, according to principal Liz Rigdon.
"One of the things we thought was important was a daycare," said Rigdon. "We began making plans to open a daycare."
During that planning, Rigdon said church members repeatedly heard the same comments from parents concerned about their children's education.
Two years and countless hours later, Family Community Church will open the doors in August on an education facility between Baskin and Winnsboro on Highway 15.
Rigdon said registration has so far exceeded expectations.
The school originally envisioned opening with 70 students. So far, Rigdon said more than 84 have registered. Also, Rigdon said she believed the current facility could house up to 150 students in classes of 20.
Each class will be capped at 20 students and will be staffed with a state-certified teacher and a para-professional.
Tuition will be $400 a month for the school's pre-K program and $385 per month for grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
One thing that sets this school apart from other schools in the area will be a strict approach to Bible teaching.
"We desire to teach the students about the Bible, not any particular doctrine," Rigdon said. "Our school will have many denominations within it, and we will respect that."
Rigdon was quick to distinguish her school from a proposed charter school.
"It is not the charter school," said Rigdon. "This will be a Christian school for elementary students kindergarten through grade eight."
