'Read 180' program on tap Eighth grade students in Franklin Parish will soon have a new reading program available to them, possibly as early as next year. The Read 180 program is specifically designed to improve reading levels to grade-level and beyond.
"We've done a good bit of research on several different software programs for those students who need extra help in reading," said Dr. Lanny Johnson, superintendent, "the gains are profound and we need a lot of help in the eighth grade English/language arts."
Johnson said the Read 180 labs would be offered at the four junior high schools in the parish: Baskin, Crowville, Fort Necessity and Gilbert schools.
Each program cost some $53,000, for a total cost of $227,724. Without the purchase of workbooks, there are no recurring cost.
Johnson proposed that the program be funded with the $800,000 tobacco suit money currently held in a bank in Baton Rouge.
"The people voted that this money can only be used for classroom instruction," said Johnson, "It can't be used for construction or general expenses, so I think it would be worth our money to raise the eighth grade English - language arts scores, as well as others. I just don't see any need for that money to sit in a bank drawing interest when we can't use it to build new buildings or buy textbooks."
With a two-thirds vote, the Read 180 program was added to the agenda and accepted unanimously by the school board members. |
