Ceremony honors the fallen With the stars and bars waving in the wind of a beautiful afternoon, veterans were honored at a Memorial Day program held at the Lowentritt Pavilion at Davis Park on Monday. Diamond Hawthorne American Le-gion Post 84 sponsored the event.
Bobby Collins was master of ceremonies for the ceremony, honoring those lost to war.
Mayor Jack Hammons opened the ceremony with a welcome to all those in attendance and Don Blackmon led the prayer. Kay Scott led the Pledge of Allegiance and Tanya Cobb sang the National Anthem.
Dr. Harry Boyd served as guest speaker for the ceremony. His message reminded everyone of the purpose of Memorial Day.
"It is a day born from compassion to honor the soldiers who have been killed serving this country," said Boyd. "It's a time to recognize and memorialize those who gave so much for the freedom Americans enjoy today."
The American flag was lowered to half-staff by Alton McKeithen, Ron Charrier and Ardis Free. Don Blackmon delivered the KIA reading and Roger Beall played "Taps" to close the ceremony. |
