Arender named 8th Grade Student of the Year

Regan Elyse Arender is Franklin Parish's Eighth Grade Student of the Year.

Regan is the daughter of George and Sonya Arender and is a student at Baskin Junior High. She credits her close-knit family and her faith for giving her the strength to be a good example to others.

A motivated and focused student, Regan said her goal after high school graduation is to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe to major in radiology.

"I am interested in this field," she said, "because I would like to be able to express my care and compassion towards those who are sick or hurt."

Regan is involved with a number of extra-curricular activities, including softball, basketball, co-captain of the drill team, cheerleading coach, Beta Club, Bible school and music teacher. She has also taken dance lessons for eleven years at Miss Tommie's School of Dance and is a very active member of the Mangham Baptist Church youth group.

Regan's principal, James Shirley, describes her as "a well-rounded student and community member who will represent Franklin Parish well as Student of the Year.

Regan said she is motivated to bring awareness to the issues that face many teens today.

"Many teens experiment with drugs, alcohol, and other activities that are not necessarily good for them to ease pain or to fit in with a group," she said. "I think I can prevent some of my friends from doing these things by setting a good example and by giving them an alternative. If I stand strong in my beliefs, then I will be more able to help people my age make better choices within their lifestyle."

Honors she has earned during her school career include the Woodman of the World's Outstanding Student award for scholastic leadership, "Most Spirited" drill team award, sportsmanship awards in softball, and academic honors for honor role, principal's list, LEAP and iLeap scores. She also received Baskin Junior High's Outstanding Character, Achievement and Leadership awards for Beta.
