Crum named 5th Grade Student of the Year Logan Mechell Crum has been chosen as Franklin Parish Fifth Grade Student of the Year.
Logan is the daughter of Wendy and Ronald J. Crum, Jr. of Gilbert and is a student at Gilbert Junior High School. Her love of animals, horses especially, has inspired her future plans to become a veterinarian.
"I have wanted to be a vet since I was three years old," she said, "I had a miniature horse named Starman that would lie down in the pasture and let me doctor on him with my toy doctor kit. I've loved it ever since."
Logan said she has the best family because of their love and support of her interests and activities. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, barrel racing and riding horses with her family.
Logan has competed in several 4-H horse shows while qualifying for state competition, as well as participating in the youth division of the Northeast Louisiana Barrel Racing Association. She is a member of the Northeast Louisiana Riding Club and was a Gilbert Jr. High homecoming maid three years running.
Academic awards Logan has received in her school career include principal's list standing, Exemplary Academic Achievement on LEAP and iLeap tests, scoring advanced or mastery in math, social studies and English language arts.
Logan said that Hurricane Katrina also influenced her life in many ways. She met a man from New Orleans who had evacuated with his seven horses.
"I fed the horses, watered them, and cleaned their stalls," she said, "I got to help a man in need by doing something that I love to do."
Logan thanks her family and God for all He has done for her.
"God has given me a wonderful family who loves and supports me in everything I do," she said. I don't think I would be the person I am today if it wasn't for them." |
